India has
the 2nd highest overworking people with 42 hours a week on an average.
Hong Kong is at no: 1 with people working 44 hours a week, according to a
survey by global travel agency Expedia Inc.
The reports
also suggested that India is 10th most vacation-deprived nation, as
employees in India do not take much leaves in order to impress their boss.
Expedia,
which conducted an
online survey between August and September, where 8,535 respondents from 24
countries participated, said around 63% Indian feel that they are vacation-deprived.
“Indians are
second, behind Thailand (22%), in not taking leaves to be in boss’s good books,
while 18% of Indians don’t use all the leaves because they fear that taking all
of the vacation time will be perceived negatively by their employer,” said
survey.
Interestingly,
reports also adds that Indian also prefer receiving money in exchange for
unused holidays followed by Brazil with 30& people preferring money over
vacation.
Indians also
prefer getting money in exchange for unused holidays, with 37% of the employed
adult population, the highest in the world, opting for it. Brazil follows India
with 30% of employed people preferring money over holidays.
Reports
delineate, “Indians want to feel important. They want to be present in all key
decisions of the company, with 25% of employed people cancelling vacation due
to this reason.”
“Ninety four
percent Indians at least sometimes check work email even on vacation, which is
the highest in the world, followed by France (93%), Thailand (92%), Malaysia
(91%) and Mexico (91%),” mentions study.
“In India,
people still lag behind when it comes to completely letting go during their
vacation. Not just this, even during regular days, Indians work for more hours
than other countries with 38% people working for 41-50 hours a week. This shows
the need for a better work-life balance,” said Vikram Malhi, general manager,
South and Southeast Asia, Expedia India.
